Iced “Un-coffee”

Iced coffee

I used to be completely addicted to Frappuchinos at Starbucks.

I always thought they were amazing sweet coffee treats. I have never been much of a black coffee drinker.

After dealing with some pretty severe anxiety, I completely gave up coffee because I didn’t like the way it made me feel. Coffee would give me the shakes, jitters and made me feel overly anxious.   No one has time for that!

After being coffee free for the past few years I have been really tasting it lately.  I’ve actually been craving it.

So a few days ago I pulled out my Dandy Blend (which takes remarkably like coffee), and quickly brewed up this fantastic iced “un-coffee” brew.

Dandy Blend is a blend of the roasted roots of dandelion, chicory, and beets along with the grains of barley and rye.   All of these herbs are very supportive for liver health.

Making an iced coffee substitute with Dandy Blend is actually easier than brewing a pot of coffee in your coffee maker.

Although this “coffee” recipe doesn’t compare with the sweet taste of my old coffee friend Frappuchino,  I think it has a wonderful taste where it doesn’t need the sugar that a Frappuchino provides.  If you feel like it does need some extra sweetness feel free to add some raw honey or stevia to satisfy your sweet tooth.  It will still be healthier than your Frappuchino will ever be.

The below instructions will make about 7 cups of this iced coffee substitute

1. Boil 4 cups of water.

2. Add 7 Tablespoons of Dandy Blend to the bottom of a glass 1/2 gallon mason jar and 2 Tablespoons of cinnamon.  I really like Ceylon Cinnamon because there is a lot of fake cinnamon out there.   (Ceylon is sweet and is called “true cinnamon”)

3. Once water is boiling hot add it to the mason jar with your Dandy Blend. Stir until dissolved. Let cool.

4. Add 2 cups of raw milk or non-dairy milk of your choice.

5. Add 1-2 cups of ice to cool it down further.

6. Top with Healthy Homemade Whipped Cream if you desire, such as this one from my friend Kate at Real Food RN. (You could even sprinkle a dash of cinnamon on top.

Enjoy!  I love this recipe because it is decaffeinated, gluten-free, sugar and can also be adjusted to be dairy free if you need it to be.

Store the reminder in the fridge to enjoy your cold brew for later.
